God never allows His children to sin successfully. Sin may feel pleasant for a season—like God has forgotten you, isn't watching, or is too busy to notice. You might think you're getting away with it. But if you are truly a child of God, He catches you in His time because He is merciful.
Charles Spurgeon captures this truth beautifully: "God never allows his children to sin successfully." Sin may hide for a season, even for decades, but God's discipline comes to His wayward sons and daughters. And here's what's frightening: God's discipline on you never just affects you. You're part of a web of relationships, and you begin to drag everyone else down. That's not God being unfair—that's you not being fair to those around you.
As we turn to Jonah chapter 3, I'm reminded of a remarkable story from the coast of Ireland. On April 8, 1748, a man named John Newton found himself in the jaws of death during a violent Atlantic storm. Like Jonah, John had grown up in a Christian home under the influence of a godly mother, but he had walked away from God. He became a sailor, applied himself to the deplorable African slave trade, and lived a wretched life—indulging in everything you'd associate with a life separated from God.
But John could not outrun God, just as Jonah could not. When he faced death in that storm, the truth his mother had planted deep in his soul decades before emerged. He cried out to God for mercy, and God answered.
John Newton would go on to become a pastor, an anti-slavery advocate, and a hymn writer. He penned one of our greatest hymns: "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found. I was blind, but now I see."
Two thousand five hundred years separate John Newton and Jonah, yet their stories are remarkably similar: a massive storm, a U-turn toward God, the same God, the same act of divine intervention. The God who rules is the God who saves. God saves wretched, unbelieving sailors. God saves wretched, prodigal believers. Salvation belongs to God, and it is offered to all who would believe through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jonah is now a graduate of the most severe form of God's seminary: the belly of a fish. He's survived the storm and lived through God's discipline. And now, in chapter 3, he receives a remarkable gift: a second opportunity to obey.
Now, the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you." (Jonah 3:1–2)
This is not the first call—it is a re-commissioning. The message is identical to what God said at the beginning of Jonah's story. God is absolutely clear:
What? Jonah must go. "Arise and go"—go with urgency, go immediately.
Where? To the great city of Nineveh, the metroplex of the ancient world—a city full of people. Little boys and girls. Mommies and daddies. Grannies and grandpas. Uncles, aunties, and cousins. Full of people who don't know God.
Why? "Proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you." God has a message for this great, wayward people. They are great in size, great in population, great in everything—including sin and depravity. They are violent and arrogant, a thorn in Israel's side for decades. Yet all people belong to God. Even the depraved and dangerous ones deserve to hear God's message.
God speaks directly, clearly, and specifically. Notice those crucial words: "the second time." This is not a new commissioning—it's a second chance. Jonah receives this re-commissioning with seaweed still in his hair and fresh memories of God's discipline to move him toward obedience.
So, Jonah arose and he went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. (Jonah 3:3)
This is where Jonah should have been months ago. This is perhaps where you should have been years ago. Jonah took the long route to obedience, but he finally arrived.
In chapter 1, he refused to obey. In chapter 1, he refused to pray. In chapter 1, he refused to repent. But now, finally, he goes when God says go. The storm obeyed. The sailors obeyed. The fish obeyed. And now, at last, the main human character in this story obeys.
There is a movement from words to God—thanksgiving and repentance—to obedience to God in the direction of his life. This is the path God wants all His people of faith to walk: the path of obedience.
John Newton understood this deeply. He reflected on obedience in a beautiful way:
"If two angels were to receive at the same moment a commission from God, one to go down and rule Earth's grandest empire, the other to go and sweep the streets of its meanest village, it would be a matter of entire indifference to each which service fell to his lot. The joy of the angels lies only in obedience to God's will."
Obedience matters. It doesn't matter what God asks you to do—what matters is that you obey. Obedience from faith is not an unrealistic or unfair expectation from almighty God. It is a privilege.
Now, Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a 3-days walk. Then Jonah began to go through the city 1-day's walk, and he cried out and said, "40 days and Nineveh will be destroyed." (Jonah 3:3–4)
Imagine the courage this required. Jonah is entering a deeply hostile culture—the superpower of its day. The Ninevites were known for their brutality. If you visit the British Museum today, you can see ancient murals depicting what the Ninevites did to people they didn't like. This was a culture that would want to "cancel" him—not on social media, but by ending his life.
Yet Jonah walks through the city proclaiming a very simple message: just five words in Hebrew. "40 days and Nineveh shall be destroyed."
The number 40 is significant throughout Scripture as a period of testing and watching—God observing how people respond.
The 40-day warning to Nineveh is not just a countdown to judgment—it contains a built-in condition. The Ninevites have 40 days to respond and potentially avert the coming judgment. This is an invitation, a test, a period in which God watches to see how they will respond.
Let me leave you with one practical word: Walk the path of faith with God in obedience.
You have the capacity as a child of God to walk in disobedience. Doing so doesn't mean you lose your salvation, but it means you're walking inconsistently within your relationship with God. Please don't. Learn from Jonah. There are many other trails you could walk, and they all lead to different "Tarsuses"—places of running from God. But those trails will incur God's discipline.
The Apostle Paul writes:
We have been called to the obedience that comes from faith for his name's sake. (Romans 1:5)
Genuine faith in God wants to obey God. Genuine belief, undisturbed by dabbling with sin, wants to be loyal, practical, hands-on. Faith works. Jesus told His followers:
Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
This isn't obedience to earn God's salvation. Salvation is through faith alone in Christ alone. But those who truly believe want to pursue a life of faith and obedience. It's consistent. It's the will of God.
I love the story of the Queen of Belgium visiting Poland in the 1950s. She asked a government officer assigned to her, "Are you a Christian?"
With embarrassment, he replied, "Believing but not practicing."
She realized his dilemma: "Oh, you're in a communist country, so you practice what you don't believe and don't practice what you do believe." His life was inconsistent. We have been called to practice what we believe—to live in obedience that comes from faith in Christ.
Listen, we all have let God down. It's just a matter of extent. As believers—as spouses, as parents, as friends, as employees, as Christians in general—failure is on all of our resumes.
But you have an opportunity. A second opportunity. A third opportunity to obey. Do not abuse the amazing grace of God. Get back on track with God today.
John Newton never got over the grace of God. Near the end of his life, he wrote:
I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I want to be, but still I am not who I once used to be.
He never got over the grace of God that saved a wretch like him. And he fulfilled his vows in gratitude through a life of obedience to God.
There is one very basic command that filters from Jonah through to us on the lips of Jesus:
Go and make disciples of all nations, beginning where you live. (Matthew 28:19–20, paraphrased)
Go. Where? To the ends of the earth, beginning in your neighborhoods. To your neighbors. Why? To make disciples of little boys and girls, moms and dads, grannies and grandpas who are lost, uncles, aunties, and cousins.
Obedience means that you are salt. Obedience means that you are light. Obedience means that you are a pillar of truth in the metroplex where God has placed you.
Yes, it sounds scary. Yes, you might feel like quivering like Jonah on that first street of Nineveh. But remember:
I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:20)
You don't go alone. Warren Wiersbe wrote:
The will of God will never lead you where the grace of God can't keep you and the power of God can't use you.
There is no better way to live life than walking the path of faith with God in obedience. Walk it. Live it. Let the grace of God that saved you inspire you every day to do your best and walk in His ways obediently.
