Every group you've ever been part of has two sets of rules. There are the explicit ones — clear, well understood — and then there's a hidden set you usually learn only after you break them.
Imagine going to your new in-laws' house. They welcome you warmly: "Make yourself at home. This is your home now. The pantry is yours, the fridge is yours. Come on in." You know the basic etiquette already — be gracious, be thankful. But over time you discover that one chair is Dad's chair, and you've been sitting in it. Or that candy dish with the Smarties — nobody told you not to touch it, but don't touch it. Somehow Dad always knows.
Every community — a family, a church, a school — has these unspoken rules underneath the spoken ones, the things that mark who truly belongs versus who is merely tolerated. This is exactly the tension we find in Acts 15.
Certain teachers came down from Judea to Antioch and told the Gentile believers:
"Unless you are circumcised according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved."
This sparked sharp dispute between Paul and Barnabas and these teachers — so sharp that representatives were sent all the way back to Jerusalem to settle it with the apostles and elders. This wasn't a minor issue; it was foundational. Underneath the question of circumcision was a bigger one: What does it actually take to be saved? Is faith in Jesus enough, or is it faith in Jesus plus certain requirements?
Most of the early church were Jewish believers, steeped in the Torah, and circumcision was historically the doorway into relationship with God for converts. These teachers were sincere "Jesus people" — they believed Jesus was Messiah — but their allegiance to Moses ran deep, and they projected everything they'd known about relating to God onto these new Gentile converts.
Imagine a family adopting a child from another country — different language, different food, a completely different culture. Now imagine the parents saying, "We hope one day to call you our son or daughter. But first, learn our language, eat our food, act like you've always belonged — then we'll call you ours."
We'd be horrified by that. That's not how adoption works. The moment the papers are signed, the child belongs — full stop. Belonging comes first; the shared life and behavior follow out of that belonging. This is precisely what's at stake in Acts 15.
At the Jerusalem Council, Peter stands and reminds everyone what happened with Cornelius — how the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles before he'd even finished preaching.
"God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith... It is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are." (Acts 15:8-11)
God purified their hearts by faith — not by an outward ritual, not by circumcision. Peter even admits that neither he nor his ancestors could ever fully bear the yoke of the law. So why place that impossible burden on new believers?
Salvation is a gift of grace. It cannot be earned, no matter how hard we try — and trying isn't wrong, but it's simply not how grace works.
Here's what makes this more than a history lesson: the pull toward earning our salvation is still alive in us today. We may not require circumcision, but we still try to earn God's approval through discipline, productivity, respectability, religious performance.
Martin Luther said the default setting of the human heart is religion — which is to say, self-salvation.
To live like "I need Jesus plus something" is to treat Jesus as a great assistant rather than as Savior. As Tim Keller put it:
"Religion is good advice; the gospel is good news. Religion tells you what you must do to be accepted by God. The gospel tells you what God has done in Jesus so that you are accepted by God."
Religion puts burdens on us — the burden of proving ourselves, of guilt, of shame, of fear. The gospel removes those burdens entirely.
After Barnabas and Paul recount the signs and wonders God has done among the Gentiles, James — the leader of the Jerusalem church — stands and quotes the prophet Amos, spoken 700 years earlier:
"After this I will return and rebuild David's fallen tent... and the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord." (Acts 15:16-18)
James recognizes: this is that day. The days the prophets longed for have arrived. So he proposes they make it as easy as possible for Gentiles to turn to God — asking only that they abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals, and from blood.
At first this sounds like more rules being added back in. But James isn't answering "what must I do to be saved?" — that's already settled: grace, through faith, full stop. He's answering a different question: once you're already in the family, how do you live as family?
The grace of God costs me nothing — I can't pay for it. But love is different. Love asks everything of me.
These four requirements target things fully normalized in Greco-Roman culture (meat sacrificed to idols, sexual immorality) but deeply offensive to Jewish believers. James isn't handing out new fine print on a salvation contract — he's teaching the Gentile believers how to love the family they now belong to, and calling Jewish believers to make room for them in return.
When you marry someone, you don't say your vows, sign the paperwork, and go back to your old apartment and old habits. You spend your life learning what matters to your spouse — not as obligation, but as devotion. You shape your life around love. The same is true in the family of God: the real question becomes, what does love require of me toward my brothers and sisters?
The council concludes their decision this way:
"It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us." (Acts 15:28)
They reached this discernment through prayer, shared testimony, and attention to Scripture and the words of Jesus — together, in community. And we know it landed well, because the letter was received with gladness in Antioch (Acts 15:31). The decision honored Jewish conscience, honored what God was doing among the Gentiles, and honored the word of God.
Jesus plus something is not good news — because we can never know if we've added enough. We don't know who's in, who's out. Do I actually belong? Am I actually approved of?
If we add anything to grace, we distort the gospel. But if we ignore that love requires sacrifice and devotion, we miss the point too.
The good news of Jesus is this: I was lost in sin, so lost that Jesus had to give his life for mine. And I am so loved that Jesus was glad to give his life for mine — there was joy in it for him.
Is there anything you've added to the gospel — some behavior, some ritual, some performance you've quietly believed adds up to your salvation? Jesus is enough. There may be something the Holy Spirit is asking you to release so that grace alone can hold you.
And if today is the day you want to turn to Jesus for the first time, or return to him again, that invitation stands open:
"Jesus, I need you. Thank you for loving me. I believe you are the Son of God, that you died and rose again, that you paid the price I could not pay for my sin. I turn to you. Be my Lord, my King, my Shepherd. Show me what it looks like to reflect this love to the people around me."
