God's Discipline as an Act of Grace

There are three truths I want you not to miss this morning. The first and most fundamental is this: God disciplines. God disciplines his children. We in the 21st century often pick and choose what we believe about God, selecting only the aspects that comfort us. But the scriptures are clear—God disciplines. He did so in the Old Testament, and He does so today.
If you are a child of God, don't forget this. He will bring discipline into your life. He will redirect your stray steps and correct your stray heart when necessary. And this discipline is an act of grace, not cruelty.
Jonah experienced God's discipline directly. He hadn't stolen money or anyone's wife, but he was a rebel. He robbed God of obedience and the loyalty God deserves. Look at Jonah 1:17: "The Lord sent a huge fish to swallow Jonah and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish 3 days and 3 nights." The Lord sent it. The Lord put him on that creative time out.
Jonah himself understood this. In Jonah 2:3-4, he says, "You threw me into the deep waters... All the mighty waves that you sent swept over me." The sailors cast him overboard, yes, but Jonah knew it was God who threw him in through the sailors. The waves didn't come by accident—God sent them to engulf him. He understood that his position was God's direct doing as an act of discipline upon his unruly heart.
Then in Jonah 2:10: "Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it spat Jonah out onto dry land." This isn't just indigestion. God sent that fish, and God commanded that fish to spit him back out. The Lord did this because God disciplines his own.
This pattern stretches across all of scripture. God disciplines nations. The major prophets deliver messages to the nations of the world, calling them to repent. When a nation refuses to be corrected and disciplined, eventually God's wrath is poured out in judgment. Sodom, Gomorrah, and the Canaanites all received opportunities to turn to God long before judgment fell.
But God also disciplines His own people. Israel in the Old Testament experienced a constant cycle of correction. The discipline was incremental—from famine and drought, ultimately to exile—but always designed to bring them back to God.
Individuals were not immune either. Take Moses. One sin, one mistake, one act of disobedience resulted in his exclusion from entering the Promised Land—the land he led millions of people toward for 40 years. Was this harsh? No. Holy, holy, holy? Yes. No one messes with God. Not you, not me, not even mighty Moses. Not anyone, regardless of their position in Christian leadership.
By his own choice, Jonah put his life on a downward trajectory. Literarily and spiritually, he went down. He went down to Joppa, down into the ship, down into the belly of the ship. God took him down as far as one can possibly get on this planet—to the very bottom of the seabed of the Mediterranean Sea.
But this was time for reflection. A purposeful time out. Yes, it may have felt like a coffin-like chamber, but God was helping Jonah come to his spiritual senses. The three days and three nights in the fish's belly spoke of justice tempered with compassion.
God disciplines His children to grow us, to prune us, to purify us, to direct us, to redirect us, and to align us to Him. His discipline might feel nasty. It might feel confusing. It might feel very uncomfortable and harsh. But it's always motivated by love if you're a child of God.
As parents understand, loving discipline helps children grow. Whether it's a time out on the naughty step, as we call it in the UK, or other forms of correction—it's all important instruction because you love your child. You want them to grow up to be wonderful members of the family and society, and ultimately to become all that God has designed them to be.
Listen to what scripture says. Deuteronomy 8:5 tells us: "Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you." It's motivated by love.
Proverbs 3:11-12 says: "My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke because the Lord disciplines those he loves as a father the son he delights in."
Hebrews 12 speaks directly to the church: "Endure hardship as discipline. God is treating you as his children, for what children are not disciplined by their father? God disciplines us for our good that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."
And Jesus Himself, in Revelation 3:19, speaking to the church of Laodicea, says: "Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline, so be earnest and repent."
Here's a practical lesson: Take his correction. Take his correction daily. Embrace his correction. Embrace his time outs in your life. While you're sitting there reflecting, listen to what God has said to you. Reflect upon your life. Repent of known sin. Remember to follow Jonah's heart path back to God. Don't waste the opportunity to return from your waywardness every single day.
There's a story about a man driving down a road who saw a sign: "Road closed. Do not enter." He thought, "Well, I'll just drive past it." So he did. Then he saw another sign: "Turn back." The birds were chirping, the sun was shining—he kept going anyway. Then came a sharp turn, and just in time he slammed on the brakes before falling over a cliff. The bridge was down.
He thanked the Lord, composed himself, and headed back up the road he had come down. On the way back up, he saw the back of the sign he'd ignored at the start. It read: "Welcome back, stupid."
Proverbs 12:1 says: "Whoever hates discipline is stupid." The word doesn't mean rudeness—it describes acting irrationally, like a wild beast that cannot be controlled or helped.
I've had my share of "Welcome back, stupid" signs in life. I'm sure you have, too. But here's the truth: rebukes of discipline are like the path leading to life (Proverbs 6). God disciplines his own out of love.
So take His correction. Take His rebuke. Don't take a huff. Swallow your pride. Humble yourself and get on the path of life. That's where God wants you walking.
