Stories have a remarkable ability to grab us and show us truth rather than simply tell us truth. They engage us in ways that pure instruction cannot. This is why God repeatedly uses stories throughout Scripture to communicate His message to His people—not fictional stories, but real historical accounts of real people living real lives with God or against God in the real world we still inhabit.
The book of Jonah is one of the most well-known stories in all of history. Though Jonah is just one of twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament, his story is absolutely gripping and action-packed: a runaway pastor, a sea storm with pagan sailors being converted, a fish that swallows him whole, a crisis moment in the belly of that fish, a short turn-or-burn message preached to a city, and a city revival. Yet the story culminates in a heart-to-heart conversation between a moody missionary and God.
Many people reduce Jonah's story to merely the controversy over whether he was actually swallowed by a fish. But if God created the heavens and the earth in the beginning, then providing a great fish to swallow Jonah for three days and three nights is certainly not a problem for God. The real problem is ignoring the point of Jonah.
This story is personal—a man and his God. God chose to include it in Scripture so we might watch and learn about our own life with God. Yes, the sermon will reference Ninevites, Phoenician sailors, Assyrians, Tarshish, and Jeroboam the second, but understand this: I'm talking about God and I'm talking about you. That's what this story is about.
In Jonah, God reveals His heart for the cultures of the world. He exposes how our hearts align—or fail to align—with His. The story teaches us about:
Before we enter into Jonah's story, we must understand three critical worldviews that Jonah himself held as a God-following Bible believer. These are not surprises to those who read Scripture, but they are essential truths we must remember as we study this book.
Jonah knew that God's people do not deserve God's compassion. God's people do not merit His kindness. Experiencing God's favor is never something we can earn through personal merit or achievement. God is not running a points-based reward system like an airline frequent flyer program, where gold status gets you a smile from God and platinum status gets you a little protection.
When we look at Jonah chapter 1, verse 1, we see the classic formula that introduces a professional prophet: "The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai." This tells us Jonah was formally trained in the ways of God. He had studied at schools of the prophets. He knew the key biblical texts that every God-follower should understand.
From Genesis 12, he knew that Abraham didn't deserve to be God's chosen instrument through whom God would bless all humanity—it was an act of God's kindness and compassion. From Exodus 12 and 19, he understood that Israel didn't deserve to be redeemed and partnered with God in His purposes—that too was purely God's compassion. From Deuteronomy 28, he would have known about the covenant blessings and curses, understanding that his own people deserved discipline, not favor.
In Jonah's own time—the 8th century BC—he lived under King Jeroboam II, a wicked king ruling wicked people. According to 2 Kings 14:24, Jeroboam "did evil in the eyes of the Lord." God's people were spiritually rotten, paganized by the very culture they were meant to reach. They deserved God's discipline, not His compassion.
Jonah also knew from Exodus 34:6-7 that God described Himself as "compassionate and gracious...slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness," but also one who "does not leave the guilty unpunished."
This truth remains in the New Testament as well. Romans 3:23 tells us, "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." No one merits God's favor by inherent right. We are all sinners in need of grace.
But here's the good news: God chose to extend His undeserved compassion to His people anyway.
Before Jonah 1:1 begins, Jonah had already been called to preach a message to his own people. Look at 2 Kings 14:25-26: Even under the wicked King Jeroboam II, God sent Jonah with a message of prosperity. While prophets like Amos preached repentance and Hosea called out spiritual adultery, God sent Jonah to preach blessing.
During those wicked days, God prospered Israel. The nation experienced military success, geographic expansion, and economic wealth—the kind of prosperity they hadn't seen since Solomon's time. Jonah became a celebrity pastor. Everyone wanted to hear his message. Yet despite this undeserved blessing, the people didn't turn back to God.
Why did God prosper them? The answer is in 2 Kings 14:26-27: "The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was suffering. There was no one to help them. And since the Lord had not said he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved them..." God took pity on His people. God chose compassion when they deserved judgment.
There's a helpful analogy here called "cat and dog theology." A dog receives love and care and thinks, "You must be God." A cat receives the same love and care and thinks, "I must be God." Times of blessing can come to God's people even when God's people are spiritually rotten, but it's only because God is kind.
Prosperity and money may not be signs of God's approval—they may simply be signs of God's compassion and pity, His gracious attempt to woo you back to Himself. God may bless you despite yourself, not to make you more comfortable or more self-focused, but to lean you back toward alignment with Him.
This is a core teaching of the New Testament. Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus." It's a gift—freely given, not earned. Ephesians 2:4-5 reminds us: "God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions." Romans 2:4 tells us that God's kindness is meant to lead us to repentance.
Remember this as we enter Jonah's story: No one deserves God's compassion, and yet God may choose to extend it anyway.
Here's the third essential worldview: God's people are to proclaim God's compassion to all people.
From Genesis 12:3, Jonah knew that God's purpose was that "all peoples of the earth will be blessed." From Exodus 19, he understood that Israel had a particular calling—to be "a kingdom of priests," the nation through which God would mediate His blessings to the world. They were called to be the voice of truth to the nations and cultures, not just through teaching but through living God's character and inviting others to say, "We want to live under that God."
So when Jonah 1:1-2 arrives—"The word of the Lord came to Jonah...Go to the great city of Nineveh"—it's not an unfair or unexpected request. Jonah had already been sent to preach to Israel. Now God sends him to preach to another pagan culture. "Do with the Ninevites what God did through you with the Israelites," God essentially says.
This remains a basic truth for God-following, Bible-believing Christians today. Anyone who has received God's compassion and experienced His grace personally can testify that proclaiming that good news is not an unreasonable request.
Jesus' final words in Matthew 28—the Great Commission—articulate this same call: "Go, make disciples of all nations." God's people are going people, always going people.
Dr. David Livingstone, the famous missionary and explorer of Africa, lived by two texts: Psalm 121, which comforted him as he left Scotland for Africa, and Matthew 28, which compelled him to go. Livingstone believed that the church in his generation had become spiritually lazy, and he prescribed a remedy: "The best remedy for a sick church is to be put on a missionary diet."
The book of Jonah is God's medicine for the Western Church in our generation. It calls us back to our missionary diet—remembering God's clear commission to go and make disciples.
Friend, you were commissioned the moment you entrusted your life to Jesus Christ. You've got a Nineveh to go to. Go to your Nineveh. It's going to be hard, yes, but it's God's will for anyone who calls Christ Lord.
Remember: you are a former pagan who was prospered by a kind God. You've been called and commissioned to proclaim to current pagans that there is good news—that there is a God who loves them and wants a relationship with them, not just today but into eternity. You get to be part of that when you go to your Nineveh.
