Today we open the letter from the King whose kingdom has outlasted every nation that has ever lived. This is Jesus' letter to the church in Pergamum, found in Revelation chapter 2.
"To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: The words of him who has a sharp two-edged sword. I know where you dwell. You dwell where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was killed among you where Satan dwells. But I have a few things against you. For you have some there who hold to the teachings of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. So also, you have some who hold to the teachings of the Nicolaitans. Therefore, repent. If not, I will come to you soon and I will war against them with the sword of my mouth. For he who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to these churches. And to the one who conquers, I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone with a new name written on that stone so that no one knows except the one who receives it."
Throughout this series, we've been asking a simple question: What does Jesus think of our church? Not what do you think, not what does culture think—what does Jesus think? In Revelation, we see Jesus returning for His bride not as meek and mild, but with eyes like fire and a sword coming from His mouth. When you see Jesus like this, your opinions about the songs or the sermon start to feel very small.
The very first verse of Revelation reminds us: "This is the revelation of Jesus Christ." This book isn't ultimately about timelines and beasts—it's about the transformation of you, found only through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Jesus addresses this letter "to the angel of the church in Pergamum." Some translations say "messenger," and many commentators believe this refers to the pastor. I don't believe that—there's a Greek word for pastor, and it isn't used here. I believe Jesus is writing to an actual angel of this church.
Why does this matter? Because seven times in these letters, Jesus wants us to see that the church is bigger than what we see with our physical eyes. It's not just a building or a service. There is a spiritual reality to the church, because we are in conflict with the powers and principalities of darkness.
The church in Pergamum existed in the same space as Roman worship, pagan idols, and false teaching. Naturally, there was conflict. But over time, they forgot they were in a battle. They went to church because it's what they did. Belief in Jesus felt like little more than cultural Christianity.
So what happened? They made peace, little by little, with the very things Jesus called them to resist.
Compromise will always begin with peace where Jesus called for conflict.
Every time the church gathers, something bigger is happening than whether we liked the music or the message. We are reminding one another that Jesus is still on the throne. We gather not from fear, but from victory—Jesus said, "I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." The church should never exist to simply blend in with culture. It should be slightly disruptive—not combative or hateful, but impossible to fully absorb.
Jesus introduces Himself to this church as the one "who has a sharp two-edged sword." In each of the seven letters, Jesus reveals a different aspect of who He is—always exactly what that church needs. To Pergamum, a church that had let culture grow louder than God's truth, Jesus says: I get the final word. Not Rome, not culture, not your feelings—Me.
Sometimes the most loving thing Jesus can do is disagree with you. Grace feels tender when you're moving toward Jesus, but like a threat when you're moving away from Him. He comes with a sword not to destroy, but to cut away the lies keeping you from Him.
Pergamum was the center of emperor worship—the city where Rome demanded ultimate allegiance. Roman religion wasn't concerned with what you believed; it was a ritual religion. They didn't care if you worshiped Jesus too, as long as you kept worshiping Rome and Zeus alongside Him.
For Rome, addition was never the problem. Subtraction was the problem. Rome wasn't offended by another god—it was offended by a God who refused to share the throne.
This is exactly the temptation today. Satan rarely asks you to stop worshiping Jesus—he just asks you to worship something else alongside Him:
Satan has never needed you to reject Jesus. He's just needed you to reduce Him—from King to consultant, from Lord to life coach, from the one you surrender to, to the one you check in with when you need something.
First John 2:18 tells us:
"Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that Antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour."
The Antichrist spirit isn't a single future figure—it has appeared throughout history. Anti means against; the word points to replacement. The spirit of the Antichrist is anything that opposes Jesus or attempts to take the place that belongs to Him alone. This goes back to Genesis 3, when Satan asked Eve, "Did God really say...?"—replacing God's word with something else.
Same demons, different days. But here's the good news: because the Holy Spirit has power over every unholy spirit, we are still winning. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in every believer. The battle is real, but the victory is already won.
Jesus singles out one name in this letter: Antipas, called a "faithful witness"—the only other person in Scripture given that title besides Jesus Himself. Church history tells us Antipas was casting out demons and refusing to worship Rome. Because of this, he was dragged into the streets, tied to an idol, and slow-roasted to death in front of the people—yet Jesus says, "Well done."
We need more people like Antipas who refuse to deny that Jesus is Savior and Lord.
If Jesus was bold enough to die for you, let us not be so afraid to live for Him.
Jesus also condemns this church for tolerating "the teachings of Balaam" and "the teachings of the Nicolaitans." This references Numbers 22–25: Balaam, a prophet of God, was hired by King Balak to curse Israel. Unwilling to openly curse God's people, Balaam instead advised Balak to send beautiful women to seduce the Israelite men into sexual immorality and idolatry—leading them away from God without an outright curse.
A false teacher isn't simply someone you disagree with. It's someone who claims to speak for God but teaches things contrary to His word—most often seen in compromise around sexual immorality and cultural conformity. The Nicolaitans taught that compromise with the world didn't matter; do what you want with your body. Sound familiar?
Jesus places Antipas and Balaam side by side in this letter for a reason: one man decided following Jesus was worth everything, even death. The other didn't reject Jesus—he just decided something else was worth more. Every one of us is becoming one of these two people.
"Therefore, repent. If not, I will come to you soon, and I will war against them with the sword of my mouth."
One day, every one of us will stand before Jesus. The question won't be, "Did you go to church?" It will be: Did you belong to Jesus? Was He actually Lord of your life?
This letter isn't written to people who rejected Jesus—it's written to people who decided something else was worth more than Him. That is the temptation facing the American church today.
But repentance isn't shame—it's hope. Jesus isn't saying, "You've gone too far." He's saying, "I love you too much to let you keep walking down a road that will destroy you." To repent means to change direction—to rethink how we live in light of God's word rather than the world's.
Scripture tells us there are two things to repent of: sin, and the entanglements of this world that aren't necessarily sin but have tangled us up in wrong thinking. Either we kill our sin, or it will kill us.
Consider this: in modern-day Turkey, where these seven churches once stood, less than half a percent of the population is Christian today. A region once at the heart of the early church is now one of the least Christian nations in the world. How does that happen? Compromise. On the 250th birthday of our nation, let this be a warning: one generation that refuses to repent will leave the next wondering if Jesus is worth following at all.
Jesus never confronts His people without offering an invitation back.
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to these churches. To the one who conquers, I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone with a new name written on that stone so that no one knows except the one who receives it."
The hidden manna recalls Exodus: the Israelites, freed from slavery, trusted God in the wilderness and woke to bread from heaven. Jesus calls Himself "the true manna, the bread of life" in John 6. When you resist the temptation to compromise with the world, the world may starve you—but Jesus promises to satisfy you with a bread the world knows nothing about.
The white stone was used in first-century courtrooms: after a case, a judge or jury cast either a black stone (guilty) or a white stone (acquitted, innocent, free to go).
Every day you are handed verdicts—you're not enough, you've gone too far, or the opposite, the world applauds you. But whose verdict actually matters? One day, every one of us will stand before the ultimate Judge. On our own record, we are all guilty—every one of us has bent the knee to something besides Jesus, just like the church in Pergamum.
This is exactly why Jesus went to the cross. He took the guilty verdict that belonged to you. All who trust in what Jesus did on the cross will one day stand before the Judge—not because they were good enough or never compromised, but because they trusted Christ. He reaches into His robe, places a white stone in your hand, and says:
"Acquitted. Innocent. Forgiven. Mine."
So the question remains: whose verdict will you believe—the one handed to you by culture, or the one handed to you by the King of kings, who calls you His own?
